System One promises to be the midwife of another instantiation of the concept and the reality of the the postclassical organization, which assumes a world of ontogenetics instead of ontologies, and of undecidability instead of determinateness.
The basic idea of the postclassical organization is self-organization, still in the sense discovered by complexity research sixty years ago. If you cannot describe a phenomenon by the means of either causality or statistics, and you have good reasons to assume it exists nevertheless, Warren Weaver told us in his paper on "Science and Complexity" (American Scientist 1948), you may assume as well that the phenomenon knows something about itself, that you don't know about it. If not, it would not exist. Call, what the phenomenon knows about itself, its way to self-organize.To implement that very simple idea within our work organizations may have far-reaching consequences. It would turn management science from its head onto its feet. Management science is assuming that you need strong economic restrictions to organize the soft processes of work such that they become both effective and efficient. Self-organization theory would join with quantum mechanics and say instead that you need weak restrictions, a loose coupling of elements and events in an environment, as the one and only precondition for strong restrictions to be found by the organization itself in order to find its ways to organize its work processes.
That is what happened all along, needless to say. Take Erich Gutenberg, the founder of German Betriebswirtschaftslehre. In his postdoctoral habilitation of 1929, "Die Unternehmung als Gegenstand betriebswirtschaftlicher Theorie", he took great care to consciously and deliberately accept the social, psychological, cultural, and even philosophical complexity of the organization, - and to leave it aside, using a phenomenological method Husserl had invented under the heading of epoché. Gutenberg said that Betriebswirtschaftslehre takes off exactly with such a leaving aside of the complexity of the organization in order to subject it instead to an economic (and technical) calculus turning the organization into the Betrieb, the firm or business - but no English word captures the both technical and managerial meaning of "Betrieb". Betriebswirtschaftslehre became the teaching of ways to not look at the self-organization of the organization while assuming that very self-organization as the basis for its managerial treatments. After all, the managers and leaders supposed to first plan, and then control, and then re-plan the Betrieb, are members of the very same organization they are supposed to plan and control. Gutenberg was up to a Betriebstechniklehre as well. That one, however, did not became an academic teaching discipline, for reasons worthwhile to consider, but instead the occupation of institutes of applied science like the Frauenhofer Institute in Germany.
Within System One, we once again look at the self-organization of the organization. We open the black box. We look for the invention of economics and technics within the organization. We accept a social process and social dynamics within the organization. We even take the organization to be not a machine but a small society all by itself, if society means (quoting Gabriel Tarde, the almost forgotten sociologist) a principle of association working by the means of communication to maintain a flow of association (nothing more, and nothing less).
Self-organization combines weak environmental preconditions with strong systems restrictions set by the system itself. Nobody but the system does know how to do this. That is why we speak also of X-organizations. The organization has to invent all restrictions it assumes helpful to rely upon, among them technical, economic, political, and cultural ones, not to speak of motvational ones, and it does this according to its own communicational dynamics, contructing itself via a self-narration which is a selective one, emphasizing some things and fading out others.
System One, making cognitive workflows the focal point of work organization, may prove to be the means to literally watch the X emerging, thus giving everybody, constrained by all others, the means to instantly change it.
Altough, we're working on both issues, continously pushing the user limts, and our SMB (self)-service offering is scheduled for Q2/2006.
